On 18 June 1988 Depeche Mode played a legendary performance in front of 60,000 people at the Rosebowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. It was the grand finale of their "Music for the Masses"-Tour 1987 / 1988. With "101 - Live" a recording of the concert already appeared in 1989.

David Gahan, Martin Gore, Alan Wilder and Andrew Fletcher performed a total of 17 songs this evening, including hits like "Stripped", "Just Can't Get Enough", "People Are People" and "Shake The Disease".

"101 - Live" is the first official live album of the British synth rock and pop icons. The title comes from the fact that this is the 101st concert of the band. The album landed at number five on the charts in Great Britain and even at number three in Germany.
